It's The Thought That Counts
Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother.
The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You remember how mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took elders in the church 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it."
Soon thereafter, mom sent out her letters of thanks:
"Milton," she wrote one son, "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Gerald," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!"
"Dearest Donald," she wrote to her third son, "You have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious."
気持ちが重要
３人の息子が家を出て、それぞれ自分で暮らすようになり、お金持ちになる。彼ら３人が一緒になった時に、年老いた母親に何をプレゼント出来るか話し合った。一人目が言った、「お母さんのために大きな家を建てたよ。」 二人目は言った、「お母さんには運転手付きのベンツを送った。」 三人目は微笑むと言った、「二人ともに勝ったな。お母さんが聖書を読むのが好きだったのを覚えているかい？それでお母さんがあまり良く目が見えなくなってるのも知ってるね。だからおれは聖書のすべてを暗唱できるすごいオウムを送ったんだ。このオウムに教えるのには教会の人が１２年もかけたんだ。本当にすごいんだよ。ママはどの章のどの節かを言うだけで良くて、それでオウムは暗唱するんだ。」
そしてしばらくすると、母親は息子達に感謝の手紙を送る：
「ミルトン、」と彼女は一人の息子に宛てる、「お前が建てた家は本当に大きいね。私は一つの部屋だけを使っているのだけど、家全体を掃除しなくちゃならないわ。」
「ジェラルド、」と彼女は他の息子に宛てる、「私は旅行するには年を取り過ぎたわ。うちにほとんどずっといるので、ベンツに乗ることは少ないわ。それから運転手はとっても態度が悪いの！」
「愛するドナルド、」と三人目の息子に宛てる、「お前は母親が何が好きなのかを良く分かってくれているわね。あのニワトリはとても美味しかったわ。」
