The Runt
A man lies on his deathbed, surrounded by his family: a weeping wife and four children. Three of the children are tall, good looking and athletic; but, the fourth and youngest is an ugly runt.
"Darling wife," the husband whispers, "assure me that the youngest child really is mine. I want to know the truth before I die, I will forgive you if ..."The wife gently interrupts him. "Yes, my dearest, absolutely, no question, I swear on my mother's grave that you are his father."
The man then dies, happy. The wife mutters under her breath: "Thank God he didn't ask about the other three."

ある男が臨終を迎えようとしていて、涙を流している妻と4人の子供に囲まれている。子供4人のうち3人は背が高く、器量が良く、運動神経も良い、しかし末っ子の弟は醜いちびであった。「愛する妻よ、一番下の子が本当におれの子供かどうか言ってくれ。死ぬ前に本当の事を知りたいのだ、許すから、もし・・・」と夫がささやく。
妻は優しく彼をさえぎる。「ええ、そうよあなた。絶対に間違いなく私の母のお墓に誓って言うけれど、あなたが父親よ。」
そして男は幸せな気持ちで亡くなる。妻は心の中でこう言う、「他の3人の事を聞かないでくれて本当に良かったわ。」
