Adoption
The backwoods couple was delighted when finally their long wait to adopt a baby came to an end. The adoption center called and told them they had a wonderful Japanese boy, and the couple took him without hesitation.
On the way back home, they stopped by the local college to enroll in night courses.
After they filled out the form, the registration clerk inquired, "May I ask you a question? What ever possessed you to study Japanese?"
The backwoodsman said proudly, "In a year or so, our adopted son will start to talk. We want to be able to understand him."
養子
辺境の地に住む夫婦は長い間養子をもらいたかったが、ついに見つけることが出来て大変喜んでいた。養子センターが彼らに電話をかけ、素晴らしく可愛い日本人の男の子が居ることを伝えると、夫婦は躊躇なく受け入れることにした。養子センターからの帰り道、彼らは町の大学に寄ると夜間コースに登録する。
必要な用紙に夫婦が記入し終わると、受付担当の係員が質問する、「一つ聞いても良いですか？どんないきさつで日本語を勉強しようと思ったんです？」
辺境の地に住む男は誇らしげにこう言った、「一年やそこらすれば、養子の息子が喋り始めるだろ？俺ら何言ってるんだか分かりたいんだべ。」
