When I was a young man I asked an old rich man if he could tell me how he made his money. In response, the gentleman fingered his worsted wool vest and said...
"Well, son, it was 1932. The depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last nickel. I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I sold the apple for ten cents.
The next morning, I invested those ten cents in two apples. I spent the entire day polishing them and sold them at 5:00 pm for 20 cents. I continued this system for a month, by the end of which I'd accumulated a fortune of $1.50.
Then my wife's father died and left us two million dollars."
どうやって彼は金持ちになったか
私が若い頃、金持ちなお年寄りに、どうやってお金を稼いだのか聞いたことがあるんだ。その紳士は上質なウールのベストを指差すと、こう言ったんだ．．．「そうだな、若者よ、あれは1932年の事じゃった。大恐慌に皆が苦しんでる頃、わしも最後の5セント硬貨1枚まで貧乏になってしまったのじゃ。その5セントをわしはリンゴに投資した。その日1日、リンゴを丹念に磨き上げ、夕方になってそのリンゴを10セントで売ったのじゃ。
次の日の朝、10セントを2個のリンゴに投資した。そしてまた1日それらのリンゴを磨き上げ、5:00になってそれらを20セントで売ったのじゃ。この仕掛けを1ヶ月間続け、月末には１ドル50セントのお金を手に入れたのじゃ。
そうしてるうちに、嫁さんの父親が亡くなって、遺産として200万ドルが転がり込んで来たのじゃ。」
