It's The Thought That Counts
Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly mother.
The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You remember how mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible. It took elders in the church 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it."
Soon thereafter, mom sent out her letters of thanks:
"Milton," she wrote one son, "The house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house."
"Gerald," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!"
"Dearest Donald," she wrote to her third son, "You have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious."
気持ちが大切
３人の息子は自立して家を出て、それぞれ一人で暮らすようになった。３人の息子達は皆お金持ちになった。彼ら３人は久しぶりに集まり、年老いた母親に何かプレゼントが出来ないか話し合った。長男が言う。「俺はお母さんのために大きな家を建てた。」
次男はこう言う。「お母さんには運転手付きのベンツを送ったよ。」
末っ子は微笑むとこう言う。「兄さん達より勝ったね。お母さんは聖書を読むのが好きだったろう？でもお母さんは最近あまり良く目が見えなくなってるのも知ってるね。だから僕は聖書のすべてを暗唱したすごいオウムを送ったんだ。このオウムに教えるのに教会の人が１２年もかけたんだ。すごいだろう？お母さんがどの章のどの節かを言うだけで、そのオウムは聖書を暗唱するんだ。」
しばらく後、母親は息子達に感謝の手紙を送る：
「ミルトン、」と彼女は長男に宛てて書いた。「お前が建てた家は本当に大きいね。私は一つの部屋だけしか使っていないのに、家全体を掃除しなくちゃならないわ。」
「ジェラルド、」と彼女は次男に宛てて書いた。「私は旅行するには年を取り過ぎたわ。うちにほとんどずっといるので、ベンツに乗ることは少ないのよ。それからこの運転手はとっても態度が悪いの！」
「愛するドナルド、」と末っ子の息子に宛てて書いた。「お前は母親が何を好んでいるか良く分かってくれているわね。もらったニワトリはとても美味しかったわよ。」
