Lying Contest
A clergyman was walking down the street when he came upon a group of about a dozen boys, all of them between 10 and 12 years of age.The group surrounded a dog. Concerned lest the boys were hurting the dog, he went over and asked "What are you doing with that dog?"
One of the boys replied, "This dog is just an old neighborhood stray. We all want him, but only one of us can take him home. So we've decided that whichever one of us can tell the biggest lie will get to keep the dog."
Of course, the reverend was taken aback. "You boys shouldn't be having a contest telling lies!" he exclaimed. He then launched into a ten minute sermon against lying, beginning, "Don't you boys know it's a sin to lie," and ending with, "Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie."
There was dead silence for about a minute. Just as the reverend was beginning to think he'd gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and said, "All right, give him the dog."
嘘吐き大会
ある聖職者が道を歩いていると１２〜３人の１０歳から１２歳くらいまでの少年達がいるのを見つける。少年達は犬を取り囲んでいた。少年達が犬を傷つけるのではないかと心配になり、彼は側に行き、質問する、「その犬に何をしているんだ？」
一人の少年が答える、「この犬は近所のただのはぐれ犬なんだ。僕らみんなが欲しがってるんだけど、一人しかうちに持って帰れないんだ。だから、一番の大嘘をつけたのがこの犬を持って帰れることにしたんだ。」
もちろん牧師はちょっと戸惑う。「嘘吐きの大会なんか開いては行けないぞ！」と彼は強く言う。そして彼は１０分間の嘘に対する説教を始める、最初には「嘘をつくことは罪なんだって知らないか？」そして最後に締めくくる、「ほら、私が君たちの年頃の頃は一度だって嘘をついたことがなかった。」
すると一分間ほど完璧な沈黙が流れた。牧師が彼らに伝えるべきことが伝わったなと感じ始めた時、一番小さな少年が大きなためいきをつくと、言った、「分かったよ、彼に犬をあげよう。」
